The Canyon, 2016
Two-Person Exhibition with Zin Taylor*
The Canyon is a valley eroded by flowing waters over thousands of years. It is a deep passageway that was formed from top to bottom whose landscape is made up of features created or revealed by erosion. They lay there, randomly gathered, as memories of this slow evolution. The Canyon represents a temporary idea for the gallery space in Catania, a setting in which the potential narratives within material are amplified. It is a place for people to sink into and traverse, establishing a dialogue with the shapes that are encountered.
Arranged within this setting, like a material and random presence, sculptures pose as elements for various settings. Suggested by a familiar context or simply found, the works are stripped of the names we give them in order to scrutinize and define a possible new language. Often they represent a void, the root of a recent memory contained within them. They are arranged at different heights suggesting growth. Aligned, stacked, and hung from one another, they imply performative action and a temporary life, reaffirmed by the presence of scribbles, underlying the concept of the impermanent in continuous evolution and contrast within a system of fixed coordinates. ...
